Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands Travel Guide
|
Box 63 Virgin Gorda, Virgin Gorda (284) 495-7421 http://www.leverickbay.com |
Resort Hotel Room Rates: US$300 - US$400 |
With one of the island’s most beautiful settings, Leverick Bay Resort is crowded most of the year. It is the only North Sound resort that can be reached by car because it is on the Sound’s southern shore and not on the peninsula. One of the liveliest stops on Virgin Gorda, it has the largest supply of watersports gear for rental and an active marina. An office of Dive BVI is also located here. The resort is small, with only 14 guest rooms and four guest suites. The accommodations are located above the pool and sea in a string of bi-level buildings with pastel peaked roofs.

When I first visited Little Dix Bay a number of years ago, there was a photo of a young Mohammed Ali on the lobby wall. His quote, “Hey man, this is paradise”!

The sparkling white resort villas at Mango Bay Resort were built in the late 1980s and there is room to expand along the hillside. On beautiful Mahoe Bay, about 15 minutes north of Spanish Town, the villas (from one to three bedrooms) can be rented for a day, week or month. Most stand on the beach shaded by palm trees and a few others are in a garden area nearby. Designed for casual living and comfort, the ground-level suites have Italian and French furnishings with silk-covered sofas and marble tables.

On the site of a 19th-century sugar plantation, Nail Bay is one of Virgin Gorda’s most intriguing stops. Nestled on a lush tropical hillside overlooking three of the island’s most stunning beaches, Nail Bay is both a villa community and a resort, with suites, rooms and apartments for rent. The villas are privately owned and were built to suit the individual owners’ architectural preferences. Some are quite luxurious, while others have West Indian charm.

Hotel Room Rates: US$200 - US$200 Location: The Valley, Virgin Gorda |
Directly opposite the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour, Ocean View, also known as The Wheel House for its West Indian restaurant, is a small locally owned hotel that looks like a large private house. Its 12 guest rooms are air-conditioned and have cable TV, but not all have private baths. This is a basic but acceptable choice for those who are not in their rooms much and to whom creature comforts are of minimal importance.
