The Commune is as much of an architectural attraction as it is a place to stay and features 12 individually styled villas created by some of Asia’s most progressive designers. Although interior designers might quibble about the quality of the workmanship, the innovative buildings undeniably stand out from, and yet somehow complement, the beautiful natural surroundings. Facilities are first-rate and include personal butlers, a lavish clubhouse, a stunning swimming pool – even a private path to the GreatWall. In September 2006 a new zone opened, offering additional villas and suites at more reasonable (but still decidedly high) prices. To get here, take a tourist bus to Badaling and then a taxi to Shuiguan.
