Sightseeing in Bad Homburg
There are two distinct areas for sightseeing: the Kurpark and the old town.
Old Town of Bad Homburg
The main attraction in the old town is Schloss Bad Homburg, Schulbergstraße 1, the residence of the Counts of Hesse-Homburg from 1622-1866. Only a small part of the castle is open to the public as a museum. It mainly features art and furniture from the residence period as well as the English Rooms, the rooms used by Countess Elizabeth, an English princess.
You are free to wander around the buildings, admire the view, and stroll in the pleasant garden at no charge. In the central courtyard, standing a bit awkwardly on its own, is the 48-m (158-foot) medieval White Tower, the only part of the original fortress that survived the conversion to a Baroque palace in 1679. It is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm (to 3 pm from November to February) with free admission. A pleasant beer garden operates in its shade during summer months. To the north of the castle is the 1330 Hexenturm (Witches Gate), part of the former medieval town walls.
The ancient-looking Lutheran Erlöserkirche, Dorotheanstraße 1, was constructed in 1902-08 on order of Kaiser Wilhelm II, who favored Bad Homburg throughout his life. It combines Romanesque and Byzantine elements. Its four towers enhance the impression of size and height, despite the overall compactness of the building. The interior is another surprise, with marble walls and golden mosaics reminiscent of San Marco in Venice. The nearby Roman Catholic Marienkirche is only a decade older and built as a Neo-Gothic basilica.
