Rheingau

Rheingau is the region roughly bordered by Hofheim am Main east and the Rhine River up to Lorch in the west. It is one of the most famous wine producing areas in Germany with some of the oldest and most respected vineyards in the country. To the south of Rheingau, the Rhine flows as a broad stream and at a leisurely pace through a wide valley. The southern slopes of the low hills of Rheingau facing the Rhine are covered with vineyards, mostly Riesling, as temperatures here are more moderate than the higher Taunus Mountains farther north.

The sights of Rheingau are mostly related to wine, with several picturesque towns active in wine production and the wine trade on the banks of the Rhine. On top of the hills are famous vineyards and castles such as Schloss Johannisberg and Schloss Vollrath. In the valleys are former monasteries such as Kloster Eberbach, nowadays a museum, wine institute and the largest single vineyard in Germany, and Kloster Marienthal, where church services are still held and a peaceful retreat is offered.
