Although just around the Kitzbühelerhorn Mountain from Kitzbühel, St. Johann seems a world away in terms of both atmosphere and cost; and the people, prices, and attractions here are geared more toward family fun than the fashion-conscious. The bustling village sits at the foot of the Kitzbühelerhorn, the mountain up which the local ski lifts climb. Rolling pasturelands stretch north toward the magnificent Wilder Kaiser, offering at once both Tyrolean village charm and striking Alpine scenery.
The Ötz Valley, or the Ötztal, opens up at its northern end near the town of Sautens, just off the A12 Autobahn, and finally peters out at Obergurgl some 41 slow-driving km south. The region’s young, energetic clientele comes to climb, ski, hike, and bike – and there’s plenty of opportunity for all. Skiers come year-round to the glacial slopes, climbers head up the Klettersteig wall near Langenfeld, and mountain bikers take to a magnificent trail running 80 km along the length of the valley.
The magnificent Ziller Valley, or Zillertal, runs 30 km from the A12 Autobahn at Jenbach to Mayrhofen at its southern head. Along the way, the valley links a dozen small villages, many with their own lifts, side-valleys, and lakes. In winter, the all-area ski pass includes access to 150 lifts and 500 km of groomed runs. Climbers come from all around to conquer the region’s cliffs and crevasses. In summer, trails wind among the villages and the mountain huts above, drawing hikers and bikers; the Ziller River spills down the valley’s center, tempting watersports enthusiasts; and the peaks rise all around, beckoning to paragliders and rock-climbers.
