Söll

Söll, Austria (cc)

Söll

Söll, a charming village nestled between the craggy Wilder Kaiser and the Höhe Salve mountains, offers a wealth of recreation, an easily accessed locale, and loads of Tyrolean charm. In the winter, the village of Söll is a favorite of British skiers and, in the summer, families flock here for the extensive network of hiking and biking trails. The village clusters around the 1765 landmark church, built on a central hill in Rococo style. A small but lively pedestrian area lies below, lined with hotels, shops and restaurants.

Söll quite rightly advertises itself as a “walker’s paradise.” Over 700 km of walking paths wind through the area from village to village, valley to peak, and mountain hut to mountain hut. A favorite day out starts with a hike (or gondola ride) up past the boulder- topping Stampfanger Chapel to the mid-mountain hamlet of Hochsöll, where playgrounds and Hexenwasser entertain kids and a handful of guesthouses serve up hearty fare. Farther up the mountain still, wanderers ply through the Hexenwald, or Witch’s Forest, to reach the peak of Höhe Salve. Here, visitors enjoy panoramic views of 70 Alpine peaks, take photos with cooperative, bell-laden cattle, and peek inside the Salven Chapel – at 1829 m, the highest chapel in Austria.

Söll offers extensive biking opportunities, a full program of guided walks and activities, and an expansive swimming complex, the Panoramabad. Nearby villages are easily reached on foot, bike, snowshoe, or ski, and theWilder Kaiser challenges climbers with one of the Alps’ most difficult climbs. In winter, skiers explore the SkiWelt, Austria’s largest interconnected ski area, on 250 km of groomed runs and with the help of 93 lifts. Söll enjoys an après-ski and nightlife scene that, for a village this size, is extraordinarily lively; partiers should try Pub 15, the Whisky Mühle, and the Salven Stadl.
