Småland

Småland is the largest of Sweden's southern provinces, comprising some 12,262 square miles (31,760 sq km). It is unmistakably Nordic in its composition, with densely forested areas of spruce and pine, interspersed with swatches of birch and oak, together with stony fields, wetlands and more than 4,000 lakes.

Småland's principal towns are Kalmar and Växjö, and between them the area known as Glasriket – translated as the "Kingdom of Crystal – home of the world-famous high-quality Swedish crystal. The glassblowing tradition in Glasriket dates back to the 16th century, when Sweden's ruling monarch King Gustav Vasa brought to the region artisans from Venice. However, Småland is not only the center of glassmaking but also that of high-quality, innovative Scandinavian design furniture, which, too, is famous the world over.

For visitors to Småland, Kalmar and Växjö offer good accommodations, while in Glasriket there are worthwhile cottage rentals.
