Bogotá Travel Guide
Introduction
Bogotá, capital of Colombia, sets itself apart from its latin peers – in a snobbish sort of way. And for a reason. Bogotá is unlike any other capital in Central or South America. It is a city of universities and libraries, with a supremely varied culture. It is a city where the European influence is huge, other than Spanish, that is. Here, the French have left their mark on the palaces of the late 19th and early 20th centuries; the English have made their presence felt in the residential houses of the mid-20th century; and throughout the greater part of the late 20th century, the ubiquitous American dollar has backed the proliferation of larger-than-life shopping malls and skyscrapers, leaving the Colombian capital with a sense of being anything other than a typical, run-of-the-mill South American city. In fact, Bogotá is a city with a character that defies stereotyping or pigeonholing. Bogotá also has the distinction of being the third highest capital in the world, after La Paz and Quito, perched at an elevation of 8,612 feet (2,625 m).
Location
Bogotá is situated in the western reaches of the Savannah of Bogota, on a high plateau in the Andes, more or less smack in the center of Colombia. It is easily accessible from most major cities in the region.
