Harrison’s Cave is one of the island’s most famous attractions. It was first written about in 1795, and then virtually forgotten for nearly two centuries until Barbadian Tony Mason and Danish speleologist Ole Sorensen “rediscovered” them in 1976. This unique phenomenon of nature features underground caves with stalactites hanging from the roof, stalagmites rising from the ground, and streams of crystal-clear water dropping from rushing waterfalls and forming lakes of pure, cold, bright green water. The Great Hall, an enormous cavern 100 ft (34 m) high, and the Twin Falls where the cave’s two rivers join are both quite amazing. A tour guide drives you in an electrically operated tram through the caves, stopping at the lowest level where you leave the tram and walk along by the spectacular waterfall. Designed to fit in with the natural limestone bedrock, the Visitor’s Centre provides a refreshment area and aandicraft shops, along with an exhibit of Amerindian artifacts excavated from various sites around the island.
