Pule (Temple of Universal Happiness) dates from 1766 and combines aspects of Han and Tibetan temple architecture, the latter of which is far more eye-catching. The hodgepodge of styles incorporates everything from staid Han edifices at the front of the temple. To tantric sex mandalas and a conical main hall and vivid ceiling designs distinctly reminiscent of Beijing’s Temple of Heaven! From Pule you can hike, or take the cable car up to Sledgehammer Rock (see below). North of Pule, Anyuan enjoys an attractive setting on the river bank but is otherwise unremarkable, while the closest of the eastern temples to town, Puren, is closed to visitors.
