Saxony , Germany

Destinations

Saxony is one of the smaller German federal states but one with a complex history and many historic and natural sights of interest to the foreign visitor. The main drawing cards are the great cities of Dresden and Leipzig. Dresden is famous for its Baroque architecture, making for one of the most beautiful city panoramas in Europe. Leipzig is architecturally less harmonious but an interesting city to visit. Both cities have a number of outstanding museums and galleries. The Sächsiche Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland) area near Dresden has some of the most interesting landscapes in Germany.

During the communist regime, some areas of Saxony, especially around Dresden, had trouble receiving Western radio and television. As a result, the area was known as the “valley of the clueless.” However, in 1989 it was in Leipzig and not Berlin that the opposition against the communist regime began, leading to the peaceful revolution and the unification of Germany in 1990. This process is often referred to as Die Wende (the change).
