Nicoya is a much larger city, 25 km/15.5 miles south of Santa Cruz, in the hot, dry flatlands. It is much more commercial and consequently less interesting to tourists – most simply crawl through its traffic on the way to the beach. We can say that the gasoline stations just before town, opposite the hospital, have very clean bathrooms, a pleasant surprise at a bad moment. Another pleasant surprise is the Hotel Curime, named after a famous Chorotega chief. It has a cool deep swimming pool, open-air restaurant, sports fields and rooms with or without air conditioning in duplex bungalows. You’ll find the Curime just west of town on the way to Sámara and the beach. If you’re in the area in December, the 12th marks the Fiesta de la Yeguita, when a religious parade takes place.
