Introduction
Antibes, or Antibes-Juan-les-Pins, is all about all that jazz. This is where jazz legends Dizzie Gillespie and Ray Charles, among others, and American millionaires cum jazz aficionados such as Gerald Murphy – who boasted in his collection the first recording of Louis Armstrong and whose decadent lifestyle and lavish parties inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tales of the Jazz Age and Tender is the Night – descended in the 1920s and 1930s to kick up their heels. This is where the term, "jazz age," which came to symbolize the roaring twenties, an era the French call l’age du pyjama, was coined – at the famous Casino at Juan. Murphy's legendary parties drew notable society beauties and musicians, artists, poets and writers of the day, among them the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Fitzgerald, Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Rudolph Valentino, Mistinguet and her lover Maurice Chevalier. And the party went on until the outbreak of World War II, then took up again in the 1950s, right where it had left off. Present-day Antibes remains a lively town, with Jazz à Juan, now one of the oldest jazz festivals in Europe, which debuted here in the 1960s and which attracts top jazz musicians from around the world, continuing Antibes' jazz tradition. Antibes, by the way, is also where waterskiing was invented – at least according to the Antibois! – and continues to be a mecca for watersports enthusiasts.
