La Turbie Travel Guide

Introduction

La Turbie has the best view on the Riviera. The small village is perched on the Grand Corniche at an elevation of 1,570 feet (480 m), and surveys the entire coast, all the way out to Monte Carlo. The views of Monte Carlo lit up at night, and those of the Monte Carlo fireworks competitions, are nothing short of sublime. The village itself is overlooked by La Trophée des Alpes, or simply "the trophy," a white-stone tower built by Roman Emperor Augustus in a bold demonstration of his power and to assert that Rome reigned over all that it surveyed. Originally 165 feet (50m) tall, the ruined monument still stands at a respectable 98 feet (30m) to offer an absolutely marvelous view of the Riviera – which alone makes the trip to the top worth the effort!
