Salon-de-Provence Travel Guide

Introduction

Salon-de-Provence, or simply Salon, is the principal Provençal town between the regions of Bouches du Rhône and the Vaucluse. It has a legacy tied to Nostradamas, who grew up and spent most of his life here in the 16th century, and is buried here as well. Salon is also famous as the center for the manufacture of "Le Veritable Savon de Marseille," a dense, olive-oil-based soap, among the "must-have" purchases of Provence, which has been made here since the 15th century, with a couple of local soap-making companies continuing the tradition. The town, however, is now fairly modern and sprawling to boot, but it does have a small, atmospheric old town, Vieux Ville, located on a hill in the center and dominated by a 13th-century château built by the Archbishops of Arles. Besides which, Salon's Wednesday Provençal Market at Place Morgan is a veritable draw, particularly for such food items as mushrooms, sausages, and paella.
