Gordes Travel Guide
Introduction
Gordes is a picture-perfect, fortified 12th-century village – one of the most photographed in France! – perched on a hill on the doorstep of the Vaucluse and Lubéron. It has tall, austere houses, built mainly from locally-quarried yellow sandstone, which spiral up the hillside along steep, narrow lanes paved with stepped river stones and known as calades. The village has good restaurants, hotels and guesthouses for visitors, and a lively arts and crafts scene, with scores of interesting galleries and shops. But its greatest attribute is the breathtaking view of the village itself, which bursts forth without warning as you come around a rocky hairpin bend when approaching on the D15, and which continues to be the subject of countless photographs, paintings and postcards. It's this view that inspired artists such as 20th-century Op-art creator Victor Vasarely – think Zebra – to settle in Gordes, and others such as Marc Chagall to visit here in summer year after year. And Gordes remains today as popular as ever with artists and celebrities alike.
Location
Gordes is situated above the Lubéron Valley, amid a group of mountains and hills known as Les Monts de Vaucluse.
