Orange

Roman-era Théâtre Antique in Orange, France (cc)

Orange Travel Guide

Introduction

Orange is renowned for its Roman heritage, in particular its Théâtre Antique, the most spectacular and most complete surviving example of a Roman-era amphitheater, and seeing it is the principal reason for visiting Orange. King Louis XIV once proclaimed the theater's exterior to be “the finest wall in my kingdom.” Indeed, the structure of the wall is nothing less than astonishing: pierced and chambered, it creates fabulous acoustics, a fact rediscovered only in the mid-19th century, after nearly 1,500 years of oblivion and neglect. The theater is now a UNESCO-listed site, meticulously restored to its original state, and a live venue once again. Since 1869, it has hosted the opera-festival, Les Choragies, the oldest music festival in France, and myriad other festivals and theatrical performances throughout the summer months. As for the old town of Orange, even though it's surrounded by industrial suburbs and apartment buildings, which can be disheartening, it's worth taking the time to explore, for it has café-lined streets and shops selling Provençal specialties, and a glorious 2,000-year Roman history. Orange also offers good access to hiking and cycling on Les Dentelles de Montmirail, and the added allure of nearby Avignon.
