Châteauneuf du Pape

Vineyards at Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France (cc)

Châteauneuf du Pape

Introduction

Châteauneuf du Pape, which literally means the "Pope's new castle," is the historical 14th-century residence of the Avignon Popes. Over the years, however, it has gained notoriety as a place to taste and buy wine, specifically its Côtes de Rhône wine, the most famous of the Rhône region reds. Vineyards unfold at the foot of both the town and the towering ruins of the Papal summer palace, with ample opportunities for sampling and buying wine at any of the hundreds of wineries in the area. There are actually more than 7,900 acres (3,200 hectares) of vineyards around Châteauneuf du Pape and its neighboring villages, with over 110,000 hectoliters of wine produced here in any given year. There are also paths meandering down from the town into the vineyards, offering good opportunities for walking and cycling through the latter and along the Rhône, passing by several lovely wine estates. It's worth taking the time, too, to explore the town, which is really quite charming with narrow streets lined with well-kept medieval houses, characteristic in their red-tiled roofs and pastel shutters. But still, the emphasis here is clearly on wine.
