This lively and colorful fishing port is set like a jewel between the Massif de Puget and its Calanques, on the west, and the spectacular cliffs of Cap Canaille on the east. Cassis may seem, at first, an odd choice for a “Principle Destination". Its tile-roofed houses, prinked out in Provençal pastels, are typical of many villages along this coast. Its architectural highlights are minimal. It has no distinguished museum. The shops are charming but average. But stretch out on one of its small beaches under the mist-shrouded Grande Tête du Cap Canaille – at nearly 1,400 feet, the highest sea cliff in Europe – and you will begin to see what some of the most important artists of the 20th century Vlaminck, Matisse, Dufy came here to capture.
