We stayed at deluxe hotels, ate gourmet meals, attended wine tastings, visited markets, picnicked on choice morsels beside a rushing stream under limestone cliffs. Our tour guides were knowledgeable, experienced and fluent in French; one accompanied us on a bicycle while the other cruised the route in a van, collecting stragglers, repairing cycles and offering snacks and drinks. Our bags disappeared every morning, only to turn up in our rooms at the next hotel. We cycled with detailed route guides on state-of-the-art bicycles. The company, an offshoot of Trek Bicycles, sponsors the US Postal Service cycling team. For around $3,000, all-inclusive from Avignon, the company offers five-night leisure trips for cyclists of moderate abilities; challenging performance trips, and specialty trips accompanied by US Postal Service cycling team members Lance Armstrong has ridden along in the past. If we had one little quibble with this fabulous trip it was that sometimes it seemed to be more about cycling than about touring. We would have liked to spend more time exploring but we felt a certain pressure to keep up.
