Created in 1970, the Parc Naturel Regional de Camargue is intended to balance the ecology and human activities of the area and to preserve much of the traditional lifestyle of the mas and manade. It covers all of the Île de la Camargue, the Rhône Delta area between the arms of the Petit and Grand Rhône. It includes freshwater marshes, temporary marshes and periodically flooded saltwater marshes.
