Modern French artist Victor Vasarely lived and worked in Gordes and, in the mid-1970s, established a foundation there to promote his ideas about integrating art and architecture. He even restored Gordes castle to house his work. Unfortunately for Gordes, after his death, his family became embroiled in financial disagreements over the foundation, there were court suits and some scandal. The Aix area benefitted as a result. The ultimate home of Vasarely’s monumental work became an equally monumental museum in Jas de Bouffan, a village on the western edge of Aix en Provence where Cézanne’s mother had a farm.
