The Romans suffered one of their worst defeats here in 105 BC at the hands of Teutonic tribes. Three years later, they saw the “barbarians” off, but it was not until 70 years later that they founded a colony. Later, to mark a separation between the world of the dead some 100,000 Roman legionnaires are said to have fallen and the world of the living – and to put their Imperial stamp on the landscape – they built the great triumphal arch that still stands. The friezes on the northern side are nearly intact and tell the story of the battles and the founding of the Roman colony. The location is just north of the old town on the Roman Via Agrippa, now known as Avenue de l’Arc de Triomphe. It’s about a 10-minute walk from town.
