Fernsehturm and Weißenhofsiedlung

Fernsehturm

Stuttgart’s Fernsehturm (Television Tower), Jahnstraße 120, was the first in the world built with reinforced concrete. Since its completion in 1956, it has been the symbol of the city and its viewing platform at 217 m (712 feet) still offers the best views of Stuttgart. It has an excellent restaurant.

Weißenhofsiedlung

In 1927, 16 architects from five European countries designed 21 model houses. Like the Bauhaus structures, these were long ignored in Germany, but are now considered some of the most influential architectural works of the 20th century. Eleven houses, including two by Le Corbusier and one by Mies van der Rohe, survived in their original form. Most can only be seen from the outside, but a museum has recently opened in a Le Corbusier house. Information is available from the Weißenhof-Infozentrum, AmWeißenhof 20.

Wilhelma Zoological & Botanical Garden

The Wilhelma Zoological and Botanical Garden, Neckartalstraße, with more than 10,000 animals and a thousand species, is one of the largest in Germany. It was originally constructed in 1850 for KingWilhelm I and has several Moorish-style buildings. There are also 5,000 different types of plants, providing a cross-section of different climatic zones.
