At the top of the list of attractions in Bremen is the city's Marktplatz, where you can search out the huge Rathaus (Town Hall), one of the loveliest civic buildings in Germany. It was constructed as a Gothic building in 1410, but received its Weser Renaissance façade during the 17th century. The statues of Charlemagne and the seven electors are copies – the original Gothic works are in the Focke-Museum. At the west wing is a 1951 Gerhard Marcks bronze of the Street Musicians of Bremen. The interior of the Rathaus has impressive historic rooms.

At the west wing is the entrance to the Ratskeller (Council Cellar), Am Markt, which has been in operation for 600 years. There are magnificent vaults, huge pillars, ornate wine vats, and quaint drinking cubicles. It sells exclusively German wine sourced from 650 estates and is open daily from 11 am to midnight.

The huge 5.55-m (18-foot) statue of Roland has been a sign of the town’s civic freedom and independence since 1404. It is the tallest of the 26 Roland statues still in existence in Germany. (The real significance of these Roland statues is still being debated.)

The modern 1966 Haus der Bürgerschaft houses the city and state parliaments. Arguments still rages as to whether it blends in harmoniously or entirely ruins the historic square. In sharp contrast is the nearby Haus Schütting. This 1537 Renaissance building is the former guild house of Bremen traders and has housed the Chamber of Commerce since 1849. The elaborate entrance was added in the 19th century.
