The popular German poet Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) was born in Düsseldorf. A plaque in Bolkerstraße marks the house. Heine was born Jewish, but converted to Roman Catholicism in order to enter the university. In addition to poems, he also wrote pamphlets and political protest notices, which forced him to spend years in exile in France. He is best known for his Loreley-Lied, which tells the story of the singing mermaid mesmerizing shippers until they ran their boats aground at the Lorelei rock near St Goar. During the Nazi period, his works were banned. Bebelsplatz in Berlin, site of one of the first and largest book-burning events scheduled by the Nazis, now carries his immortal words: “Where books are burned, soon people will also burn.” In addition to his birthplace, there is also a Heinrich Heine Memorial at Schwanenmarkt and the local university is named after him. The Heinrich Heine Institute has an exhibition of manuscripts, letters, and his death mask.
