One of the most popular daytrip destinations in Saxony is to the magnificently located Jagdschloss Moritzburg (Moritzburg Hunting palace) about 15 km (nine miles) north of Dresden. The ocher and white Baroque palace was built on an island in an artificial pond. The current building was completed in 1736 to the design of Augustus the Strong’s favorite architect, Mattäus Pöppelmann, but some parts of the building are 200 years older. The symmetrical palace with four massive round towers in the four corners never fails to impress. Inside the palace is the Baroque Museum, with period furniture, paintings, porcelain, and the world’s largest collection of Baroque leather wall coverings. The palace also has a large collection of hunting trophies, mostly antlers. Opening hours are 10 am year-round but closing from April to October at 5:30 pm; November, December, and March at 4:30 pm; January and February at 4 pm. Admission is Euro 4.10. Guided tours are Euro 2.
