In between the Elbe and Schloss is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Trinitatis (formerly and still commonly known as the Hofkirche or Court Church), the largest church in Saxony and the last major Baroque work in Europe. The Reformation started in Saxony and it was one of the first states formally to accept Lutheranism as official religion.

From the Hofkirche towards Neumarkt along Augustusstraße, the outside wall of the Schloss is decorated by a massive mosaic of 24,000 tiles of Meißen porcelain. The 102-m (326-foot) Fürstenzug (Procession of the Dukes) depicts all 35 rulers of the House of Saxe-Wettin on horseback, from the first Margrave of Meißen to the Dukes, Electors and finally Kings of Saxony in chronological order from 1125 to 1918. The mosaic survived the bombings of 1945.

Behind the wall is the Langer Gang (Long Hall), with a series of 22 Tuscan round-arch arcades connecting the castle with the Johanneum. The courtyard, Stallhof, was formerly the royal stables and site for knights’ tournaments. Nowadays it is used for cultural events, including the medieval Christmas market – Germany’s oldest. The Johanneum houses the Verkehrsmuseum (Tranport Museum), Augsutusstraße 1. The museum has an extensive collection of bicycles and the oldest tram in Germany.
