It would be an error to dismiss the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon (Mathematics and Physics Saloon) as boring or too specialized. This small museum hidden in a corner of the Zwinger is dedicated to clocks and scientific instruments from the 16th to 19th centuries. Even the briefest of visits will be rewarding. The pieces on display are more art than science and reflect a time when the two disciplines were not strictly divided. The collection includes the largest collection of big globes in Germany and several richly decorated measuring, optical, and meteorological instruments. On display is the world’s oldest calculator, developed by Blaise Pascal in 1642. A large collection of clocks in all forms and shapes are exhibited on the second floor. The entrance to the salon is in the corner between Wall pavillon and Kronentor.
