The Semperoper (Semper Opera House), situated on Theaterplatz (Theater Square), is one of the best-known and most loved buildings in Dresden, which manages to dominate Theater Square despite the immediate presence of the Zwinger, Schloss and Hofkirche. This is somewhat ironic, as it is High Renaissance in style rather than Baroque and much newer than the façades erected by Augustus the Strong. It was completed in 1878, replacing its burned-down predecessor, also designed by Gottfried Semper, only to be destroyed in the air raids of 1945. The East German regime rebuilt the Semper between 1977 and 1985 largely according to the original plans.

The Semper is a masterpiece of 19th-century architecture, with acoustics said to exceed those of the famed Scala in Milan. The outside has two floors of arcades with a third one recessed on top. The main entrance is adorned by a bronze quadriga. Sculptures of literary giants such as Goethe and Schiller, as well as Shakespeare and Molière, are set in the niches. Most of the interior is richly decorated, with the opera hall itself displaying restrained elegance. It is well worth seeing even if you don’t attend a performance. The Semper is generally open weekdays from 10 am to 6 pm with guided tours costing i5. The exact schedule is posted weekly at the entrance as it depends on rehearsal and performance times.
