The Semper is a masterpiece of 19th-century architecture, with acoustics said to exceed those of the famed Scala in Milan. The outside has two floors of arcades with a third one recessed on top. The main entrance is adorned by a bronze quadriga. Sculptures of literary giants such as Goethe and Schiller, as well as Shakespeare and Molière, are set in the niches. Most of the interior is richly decorated, with the opera hall itself displaying restrained elegance. It is well worth seeing even if you don’t attend a performance. The Semper is generally open weekdays from 10 am to 6 pm with guided tours costing i5. The exact schedule is posted weekly at the entrance as it depends on rehearsal and performance times.
