The museum displays the history of the two post-World War II Germanys, with special emphasis on the history of dictatorship, opposition, and resistance in the Soviet Occupation Zone and in the German Democratic Republic during 40 years of German division. In addition to contemporary items, there is also a very impressive range of multimedia presentations. Particularly interesting is video footage showing how the same events were portrayed on news programs in the former East and West.

Several audio recordings of famous speeches are available to complement the hundreds of photos and documents on display. Most of the information is in German, but English audio guides are available. This museum is far more impressive and interesting than any of the more widely advertised, and often pricey, competition in Berlin.
