The main reason for stopping over here is to see the former KZ Gedänkstatte Dora just off the main road north at the edge of the Harz Mountains. This was where the V2 missiles that rained on London at the end of World War II were produced by prisoners, inside tunnels carved into the Harz mountains. Dora was a subdivision of the notorious Buchenwald camp near Weimar. Opening hours are daily from April to September, 10 amto 6 pm, and from October to March, 10 am to 3 pm. Note that the buildings, including the tunnels and museum, are closed on Monday.
