The Bauhaus was founded in Weimar in 1919 under the leadership of Walter Gropius. The group’s interdisciplinary interaction between artist and artisans laid the foundation for modern architecture and design. Cubicle architectural design was not acceptable to conservative Weimar and the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925. In 1932, the Nazis closed the Bauhaus, accusing leading members of being communist. Most went abroad to find more acceptance of their ideas, especially to the USA. Reflecting the original rejection of the Bauhaus ideas, Weimar has only four Bauhaus sights – the Bauhaus Museum, the former Arts and Crafts School, the former School of Fine Arts, and the Haus am Horn. The latter three are UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites. The Bauhaus Museum exhibits around 500 items at a time from its vast Bauhaus collection, as well as a number of Art Nouveau works by Henri van de Velde and his followers.
