Originally established in 1619 under the direction of Mughal emperor Jahangir and dedicated to his wife, Nur Jahan, the Shalimar Gardens are located on the periphery of Srinagar, some 15 Km from the city center. Spread over 98,000 square meters and laid out over four terraces - the last of which was once reserved for the women of royalty - the gardens are irrigated via a canal fed from the Harwan and lined with fountains. Shalimar is the Sanskrit word for "abode of love."
