Built high on a hill to guard the agricultural plain below, the town was first inhabited by the Etruscans. It was the birthplace of Pope Giulio II and of the sculptor Andrea Contucci (Il Sansovino). Entered through the small stone gate of Porta Fiorentina (or Porta Romana), the main street, Corso Sangallo takes you past some fine Renaissance palazzi (Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Pretorio) to the 12th-century Chiesa dei SS Egidio e Savino.
