The 19th-century Neo-Classical façade here masks a church thought to have existed since at least the seventh century, itself built on the remains of former Roman and Etruscan temples. No longer in religious use, the basilica is now only open for shows and exhibitions. Try to make it inside regardless of the event; it’s well worth it to see the marvelous columns carved out of marmo cipollino (a marble named for its red onion-like swirls).
