Prato’s textile industry flourished in the 14th century thanks to Datini’s commercial know-how. A genius at finance, he invented the letter of credit for bank payments and set the ball rolling for many of the accounting methods still in use today. One of the richest men in Europe, he certainly wasn’t a scrooge; he left his entire fortune to the “poor folk of Prato” on his death. You can find out more about his life at his former home, Palazzo Datini which is frescoed both inside and out with scenes from his life.
