Mirroring the style of the Duomo façade and topped by an octagonal cupola in pyramidal form, Pisa’s large and circular baptistry is one of the most vibrant examples of the Pisan-Romanesque style. Architect Diotisalvi started the work in 1152, but it was Nicola Pisano who finished it off in the following century – hence the Gothic style of the upper loggia. Inside, it contains a range of sculptures from the workshop of Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, including a valuable altarpiece from 1260, and a remarkable baptismal font (1246) by Guido da Como.
