On the slopes of Monte Pisano, four miles from Pisa, San Giuliano Terme has been a spa center since Roman times with thermal-calcific waters and treatments designed to revitalize the respiratory and immune systems. It occupies an 18th-century building in a beautiful park of olive trees (Parco degli Ulivi) once frequented by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, philosopher Montaigne, and poets Byron and Shelley. In nearby Caldàccioli (from the Latin Calidae Aqua) are the remains of the Roman aqueduct, which once brought water to Pisa.
