Occupying part of the unfinished nave, one of this museum’s biggest draws has to be the exceptional views from the parapet on top of the facciatone (part of the uncompleted façade – the wall you see to your right as you approach the museum). Up here you’ll also get to envision just how big the cathedral was supposed to be. But that’s not all. Its ground floor displays carvings from the original façade, including Pisano’s marble life-size figures (1284-90), and Duccio’s famous Maestà (Madonna and Child Enthroned, 1308-11, Sala di Duccio, first floor), detail shown above, the largest piece of art to come out of the Middle Ages. Opposite it are the Scenes of the Passion, which were originally created on its back. There’s also a Virgin and Child by the artist and a triptych Nativity of the Virgin by Pietro Lorenzetti in the room.
