You can take in more atmospheric ruins by following the steps down to Corso Cavour. It’s not far along here to the Chiesa di San Domenico which stands on the site of the city’s former cathedral, Santo Stefano in Castellare. This grand Gothic hall-church had a busy construction history; it was rebuilt and extended in the early 15th century, but was deemed unstable on its completion and had to be demolished. A second attempt also proved fruitless, and it wasn’t until the complex was entrusted to Carlo Maderna that it was finally completed. Inside, a huge apse window (one of the largest in Italy) provides the light you’ll need to take in the Renaissance wooden choir, 14th-century frescoes and altarpieces by Agostino di Duccio and Giannicola di Paolo.
