Built upon the foundations of the ancient Roman trading post of Tifernum Tiberinum, Città di Castello has quietly grown over the years into a city full of magnificent medieval and Renaissance churches, cathedrals, squares and palaces. The town’s highlight is undoubtedly the Pinacoteca Comunale. It lies just outside the ancient walls of the town in a bastion from where the Vitelli dynasty controlled the town. Striking frescoes by Cola dell’Amatrice, painted stairwells and sgraffiti by Vasari decorate the exterior walls and garden façade, while inside, The Martyrdom of St Sebastian by Luca Signorelli, Trinity by Raphael, two bronze statuettes by Lorenzo Ghiberti and works by Neri di Bicci, Ghirlandio and Andrea di Bartolo prove the biggest draws.
