Of all of Belluno’s scenic mountain passes, Passo Giau (2,236 m) is one of the loveliest, with dramatic views of a number of majestic Dolomite peaks. The drive connects Selva di Cadore and Cortina d’Ampezzo and can be started at either end. From Selva di Cadore take SP638 to SS48. Along the drive you’ll see meadows, dense forests and rugged mountain peaks but the climax of the route is at the Hotel Giau (see Accommodations), which sits at the highest point of the mountain pass. This is an ideal place to stop for a midday drink on the outdoor terrace, where you can bask in the high-altitude sun and enjoy the panoramic views. If you’re driving this in the winter, consider renting a snowmobile near the Hotel Giau (see Winter Adventures).
