Commonly known as La Rotonda, the octagonal church of Santa Maria del Soccorso was designed in 1594 by Francesco Zamberlan of Bassano (a friend of Palladio). The building was completed in 1603 but its dome was demolished due to structural problems and was replaced by a sloped roof circa 1606. The church’s architecture is simple, but this simplicity is countered by the rich cycle of frescoes that adorn the walls along with sculptures and a gilded wooden altar carved by Giovanni Caracchio. The sumptuous frescoes of many 17th-century artists, including Francesco Maffei (one of the great Venetian painters of that period), make this one of Rovigo’s greatest treasures. The three large windows on each of the eight sides illuminate the church, and there are three entrances, the primary one facing east. Outside, the brick bell tower designed by Baldassare Longhena stands 57 m/185 feet high and was completed in 1774.
