Dubbed by locals as l’Americano della Gondola, Thomas Price established the Squero Canaletto (named after the 18th-century painter who depicted this very gondola yard in one of his paintings) in 2003. One of Venice’s oldest gondola yards, it is on a side street off the Fondamenta Nuove. When Price first came to the city on a fellowship in 1996 with the mission of preserving the craft and tradition of gondola building, he was a twenty-something with a college degree and a few years experience working in a boatyard in Maine. During an apprenticeship with a local gondola builder, Price learned the techniques and traditions of the trade and began building his own, many of which he has sold for tourism purposes in the United States. Today, Squero Canaletto is the site of a twice-a-week, hour-long tour where Price or his assistant Mathias explain the evolution and construction of a gondola and the traditional methods they adhere to in the construction process. If your interest is piqued, consider enrolling in a gondola workshop with their Centro nternazionale per la Costruzione di Imbarcazioni Tradizionali. Thomas Price offers demonstration workshops in Italian, English and German and, while it’s impossible to master gondola-building during a weeklong course, their workshops expose you to the various phases of gondola construction and teach the history and role of the gondola in Venetian society. The course is offered between May and Oct and costs approximately Euro 500.
