Move away from the congested areas near San Marco and the Rialto bridge and you’ll be rewarded with delightful accommodations at the Villa Maravege that seem more mainland than they do Venetian. Step off your private water-taxi into the 17th-century villa’s courtyard and you’ll hardly feel as though you’re in the heart of such a large city. Surrounded by its own gardens in a quiet area, the understatedly elegant villa, where the 1955 film Summertime starring Katherine Hep burn was filmed, will soon feel like your own private villa. There are four rooms on the ground floor that can be accessed through the garden, while the superior rooms are located off the piano nobile. Standard doubles have a canal view, while the more stylish superior rooms face the attractive garden. Rooms are bright and cheery, featuring spacious, modern baths. Sitting rooms are elegant and in nice weather you can take breakfast on the terrace. If stairs won’t work for you, request one of the two ground-floor rooms since they don’t have an elevator here. There are only 27 rooms and, if you don’t book well in advance, you’re not likely to find one waiting for you. On the doorstep of both the Accademia and the Grand Canal, you’re never far from the excitement, even though you’ll feel worlds away.
