This small osteria facing a tranquil canal behind Venice’s Giardini Biennale takes its name from an Austrian soldier who married a local Venetian woman and opened a bar here in the early 1900s. His daughter later converted it to an osteria and it remained as such until 1984 when Gianfranco Gasparini purchased it and turned it into one of Venice’s finer restaurants. In their small dining room, Gasparini serves a primarily fish-based menu crowned by dishes like the antipasto tartarra di tonno con la salsa avocado (tuna tartare with an avocado sauce), maltagliati alle capesante e zucchine (pan-seared scallops with zucchini over noodles) and the tagliata di tonno (tuna fillet served with oil and rosemary accompanied by a purée of radicchio or celery). Gasparini caters to non-fish lovers with a few signature dishes, including the filetto di branzino alle erbette (beef marinated with lemon and orange juice, pan-seared with oil and served with marjoram, basil, thyme, mint and other seasonal herbs). For dessert, don’t miss da Franz’s decadent twist on the Trevisian specialty tiramisu, prepared with lemon in lieu of cocoa. Da Franz’s wine list focuses on wines from Italy, France, California and Chile, and you can spend upwards of i800, depending on what you choose.
