Far from the flurry of tourists and souvenir hagglers, this informal osteria adjacent to a narrow canal near Campo San Giacomo specializes in creative vegetable- based dishes and an interesting use of non-traditional ingredients like curry and yogurt. Try the flan di zucca con ricotta stagionata (pumpkin flan with aged ricotta cheese) or, if you find their side dishes as irresistible as I did, order several of them (tapas-style) like the savory tortino di patate, porcini e radicchio (potato, mushroom and radicchio quiche) and the piatto di formaggi con miele di castagno (cheese plate with chestnut honey). While this is not a vegetarian restaurant, they certainly do put vegetables to the best use. But don’t be put off by the veggies if you’re a meat-lover – there are plenty of hearty dishes, including roasted rabbit with olives and pine nuts. Just be sure not to provoke your dining companions if you’re seated in the room behind the kitchen – the canal-side door beside the table may be too tempting for some.
