From gondoliers to businessmen, locals return to the Vecio Fritolin day after day for an ombra de vin, Irina’s home-cooked dishes and her pleasant smile. The old Venetian tradition of fry shops has faded over the decades leaving il Vecio Fritolin the only one in town. And, although they don’t serve fish-to-go in scartosso (a paper cone) the way they once did, Irina and daughter Barbara bounce between the kitchen and dining rooms serving fresh fish dishes with a smile (and no apparent sense of time either). Their homemade pasta is featured in dishes like spaghetti con scampi e pomodorini piccanti (spaghetti with a spicy shrimp and cherry tomato sauce) and bavette with porcini mushrooms and shrimp tossed with fresh parsley. As if to remind patrons that they are in fact dining in a fry shop, the chef is a bit heavy-handed on the oil, but overall their dishes are quite good and prepared with fresh ingredients from the daily market. To top off the meal, Irina keeps a wide selection of wines on hand, in addition to grappas and liquors.
