As a member of the prestigious Accademia Olimpica, a group of nobles and artists dedicated to the arts, Andrea Palladio proposed the construction of a theater in 1579 to stage the academy’s theatrical performances and honor classical architecture. He envisioned a theater that would replicate outdoor Greek and Roman theaters and, after much study of ancient theaters, construction began on the theater in 1580 in the courtyard of a 13th-century castle. Although the great architect died shortly after beginning the project, his student Vincenzo Scamozzi saw it through to completion and it has come to be regarded as an urban work of art and one of Palladio’s masterpieces. Scamozzi created an impressive wood and stucco set of the Greek city of Thebes for the opening performance of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex in 1585 that was never changed. The faux sky above the seating was created to give spectators the impression of being in an outdoor theater.
